Audience Perceptions of AI‐Enhanced Entertainment Shows in China: Perceived Influence and Viewer Response Classifications

Abstract

", "\nABSTRACT\nArtificial intelligence is increasingly reshaping entertainment‐show production, but audience responses must be interpreted without conflating perceived influence with demonstrated cognitive or behavioural effects. This study examined how adult viewers in China evaluated AI‐enhanced entertainment features and how active/positive and passive/negative response tendencies changed within AI‐processed and non‐AI‐processed exposure conditions. A stratified randomized experimental design included 452 participants, equally allocated to experimental and control groups. Data were obtained through pre‐surveys, Thurstone‐type evaluative ratings, DISC‐informed ordinal subscales, expert review and monitored exposure. Viewer salience scores were highest for atmosphere (9.10) and visual impact (8.00), followed by sound (6.89), colour (6.00) and special effects (5.89). Expert relevance ratings and viewer salience scores showed strong descriptive correspondence across five aggregated elements (r = 0.8563). Relative dimension‐level indices ranked emotional transmission first (1.00), followed by visual enhancement (0.90), audio‐musical modification (0.73) and avatar substitution (0.51). Wilcoxon signed‐rank tests showed significant within‐group increases in active/positive subscale scores and decreases in passive/negative subscale scores in the experimental group, whereas corresponding changes in the control group were not significant. Because no formal Group × Time interaction was tested, the results do not establish statistically different change magnitudes between groups. The findings support a multidimensional, perception‐level framework for evaluating AI‐enhanced entertainment and recommend transparent, proportionate AI use that preserves human editorial judgement.\n"]
