Bioplastics as Sustainable Innovations to Mitigate Microplastic Pollution

Abstract
["Natural Resources Forum, EarlyView. ", "\nABSTRACT\nBioplastics hold immense promise in addressing the pressing environmental challenges posed by microplastic. While assessing research and innovations on bioplastics versus microplastics were date backed from last four decades. The no. of publications were observed six times more from microplastics against bioplastics. In case of innovation, i.e., patent publication, bioplastics has surpassed the microplastics, where no. of patent publications were 2058 on bioplastics versus 1498 on microplastics. These results made curios to work upon innovative technologies in the present article. The innovations in bioconversion approach towards bioplastics production could mitigate the effect of microplastics. The present article has derived patent analysis, and identified important international patent along with their key features. Following to that, this article has given special focus on quantitative attainment of bioplastics versus microplastics UN 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) on a scale of 1–10 and −1 to −10 (lowest to highest), respectively. This dual‐scale framework shown that the constructive sustainability potential of bioplastics versus the destructive environmental implications of microplastics highest 8 out of 10 and −10 out −10, respectively, for SDGs like 12 (responsible consumption) and 14 (life below water). At the end, the policy interventions were comprehended on circular economy principle for bioconversion process to reach the goal of sustainability. In conclusion, this article successfully derived a comparative illustration of SDGs attainment on a quantitative scale.\n"]
