Assessing Archaeological Evidence for Falconry in Northeast China: Raptor Remains From Five Sites

Abstract

", "\nABSTRACT\nFalconry is well documented in the historical textual and visual records of East Asia, yet its archaeological identification remains difficult because direct material evidence is rare and often ambiguous. This study examines raptor remains from five archaeological sites in Northeast China to assess whether they provide evidence consistent with falconry‐related management, deliberate deposition, or broader human–raptor interaction. A zooarchaeological approach combining taxonomic identification, depositional analysis, stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis, and palaeopathology was applied to assemblages spanning from the Late Neolithic to the Ming period. Three raptor taxa were identified: northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), and Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus). The strongest case is a nearly complete goshawk from pit H12 at the Yehe Tribe Eastern City site, where an unusual depositional context and near‐complete skeletal preservation most securely indicate deliberate and non‐routine deposition, while pathological lesions affecting the feet may suggest prolonged stress before death, possibly related to restraint or captive management. By contrast, remains from Yong'an and Ji'an Yushan Cemetery M540 are more suggestive of selective deposition or special post‐mortem treatment, whereas the small and fragmentary assemblages from Lishu Changshan and Wutaishan remain useful for documenting the regional occurrence of falconry‐relevant raptor taxa but are non‐diagnostic for specific forms of human–raptor interaction. Stable isotope results indicate broadly C3‐based food webs and no clear evidence of sustained human provisioning. Overall, these findings provide a cautious and materially grounded basis for discussing human–raptor interaction in East Asia, while showing that unusual raptor remains should not be treated as direct evidence of falconry by default.\n"]
