Abstract

["British Journal of Management, EarlyView. ", "\nAbstract\nLeader narcissism has been called a double‐edged sword, offering both benefits and drawbacks for followers. This study examines how follower perceptions of specific leader narcissism dimensions – grandiose (admiration, rivalry) and vulnerable (isolation, enmity) – relate to follower work engagement and emotional exhaustion. Drawing on the narcissistic admiration and rivalry concept, the vulnerable isolation and enmity concept, and the conservation of resources theory, we proposed possible resource losses and gains associated with each narcissism dimension. Using a two‐wave online study with 442 followers, we found that perceived leader admiration was positively associated with follower engagement, whereas perceived leader rivalry was negatively associated. Surprisingly, perceived leader isolation was also positively related to follower engagement, whereas perceived leader enmity was unrelated. None of the narcissism dimensions were significantly associated with follower exhaustion. Exploratory analyses revealed that the negative effect of perceived leader rivalry on engagement was stronger with longer leader–follower relationship duration. These findings highlight the importance of distinguishing between narcissism dimensions. Our study offers a nuanced understanding of dark leadership and provides practical insights for leadership development and improving employee engagement.\n"]
