["Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView. ", "\nThis article investigates companionate processes of self‐making in a religious community of Catholic nuns in eastern Indonesia. I argue that the sociality of the convent establishes a unique context for understanding the effects of one's company on processes of self‐becoming. Through two years of participating in convent life, and set against majority‐Muslim Indonesia's religious and ethnic diversity, I offer an experience‐near account of the complex ways that nuns negotiate self in the midst of others, each on her own journey of personal transformation. Inspired by concepts of community, intersubjectivity, and empathy, I propose company as a mid‐level analytic for anthropological investigations into self and sociality. By attending closely to the dynamics of ever‐shifting social groupings, company promises a better understanding of the transformational relationship between self and community.\n\nRésumé\nL'article étudie les processus de construction de soi en compagnonnage dans un couvent catholique de l'est de l'Indonésie. L'autrice affirme que la socialité de la congrégation crée un contexte unique où l'on peut comprendre les effets de sa propre compagnie sur le processus de devenir soi. Ayant participé pendant deux ans à la vie du couvent, avec pour toile de fond la diversité ethnique et religieuse d'un pays majoritairement musulman, elle relate, à travers son expérience, les manières complexes dont les sœurs négocient leur Moi au milieu des autres, chacune sur son propre parcours de transformation personnelle. Inspirée par les concepts de communauté, d'intersubjectivité et d'empathie, elle propose la compagnie comme objet d'analyse de niveau intermédiaire pour les études anthropologiques du Moi et de la socialité. Étroitement liée à la dynamique de groupements sociaux en constant changement, la notion de compagnie laisse entrevoir une meilleure compréhension de la relation transformationnelle entre soi et la communauté.\n\nAbstrak\nArtikel ini meneliti proses pembentukan diri melalui kebersamaan di dalam komunitas religius biarawati di Indonesia timur. Saya berpendapat bahwa kebersamaan kehidupan yang terdapat di dalam konteks biara menciptakan sebuah konteks unik untuk mengerti pengaruh lingkungan sosial seseorang terhadap pembentukan diri. Setelah dua tahun berpartisipasi dalam kehidupan biara, dengan latar belakang mayoritas Islam serta keberagaman etnis dan agama di Indonesia, saya menulis tentang pengalaman para biarawati dalam proses pembentukan diri mereka, masing‐masing dengan perjalanan transformasi diri sendiri. Terilhami oleh konsep komunitas, intersubjektivitas dan empati, saya mengusulkan konsep kebersamaan sebagai dasar analisis level‐tengah untuk penelitian antropologi tentang diri dan kehidupan sosial. Dengan memperhatikan secara seksama dinamika kelompok sosial yang kerap berubah, konsep kebersamaan menjanjikan pemahaman yang lebih mendalam tentang hubungan antara diri dan komunitas.\n"]
