["Health Expectations, Volume 29, Issue 4, August 2026. ", "\nABSTRACT\n\nBackground\nTelehealth can mitigate healthcare access barriers that contribute to persistent rural health inequities. However, a limited understanding of telehealth barriers and preferences hinders the implementation of effective programs in rural communities. We conducted a formative evaluation to identify barriers and facilitators to telehealth adoption in an underserved rural setting.\n\n\nMethods\nWe used a mixed‐methods design including surveys and in‐depth semi‐structured interviews with rural community stakeholders. The survey assessed telehealth utilisation, perceptions, technology access and barriers using Likert‐type scales. Survey data were analysed descriptively, and interview data were examined thematically across the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) constructs.\n\n\nFindings\nSurvey respondents (n = 59) were primarily female (73.2%), and White (73.2%), with a mean age of 61 years. Over half (51.8%) reported annual incomes below $20,000, and 18.6% lacked home internet access. While 59.3% had heard of telehealth, only 42.4% had used it. Among users, 61.9% reported satisfaction, and 71.4% agreed or strongly agreed that communication with providers was adequate. Key barriers included limited internet connectivity (72.8%), technology challenges (66.6%) and lack of knowledge about accessing telehealth (62.5%). Interview participants (n = 8) emphasised that trust and comfort with providers were central to acceptance and highlighted telehealth's convenience in reducing transportation barriers.\n\n\nConclusion\nIn this study population, telehealth was generally acceptable, with trust and comfort with the provider driving acceptance. Barriers were primarily related to connectivity, infrastructure and digital literacy. Consistent with larger studies, these findings support investments in broadband access, digital literacy, technical support and building patient confidence in virtual care.\n\n\nPatient or Public Contribution\nMembers of the public were involved in the design, recruitment and dissemination phases of this study. We partnered with local community organisations serving rural populations to inform recruitment strategies and to distribute surveys to community members with lived experience of healthcare access barriers. Community stakeholders also participated directly in the research through survey completion and in‐depth interviews, providing critical insights into telehealth use, barriers and preferences. While the public was not involved in the initial study design or data analysis, their perspectives shaped the interpretation of findings, particularly regarding trust, technology use and access challenges. To support dissemination and ensure accessibility of results, we developed a one‐page summary of findings that was shared with participating community partner sites for distribution back to the communities involved.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\n\nBackground\nBuilding capacity through training and education is recommended to support meaningful engagement of patient partners in health research. The Patient and Community Engagement Research (PaCER) programme is a 12‐month initiative that enables patients and community members to co‐design and conduct qualitative health research projects. Learners are sponsored by clinician researchers, community organisations, and/or jurisdictional health organisations. This study aimed to assess the experiences and impact of the PaCER programme on: (1) past learners' personal development and engagement in health research; and (2) sponsors' research programmes.\n\n\nMethods\nWe conducted a qualitative impact evaluation involving past learners (alumni) and sponsors of the PaCER programme from 2019 to 2024. A purposive sampling strategy was used, whereby selected alumni and sponsors from the 2019–2024 cohorts were invited to participate in an online semi‐structured interview. Sponsors and alumni with diverse characteristics, including variation in age, ethnicity, educational attainment, and geographic location were invited. The interview guide included questions on the experiences in the PaCER programme, post‐programme research activities, and perceptions of the programme's impact. Data were analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis approach.\n\n\nResults\nEighteen participants (12 PaCER alumni and 6 sponsors) were interviewed, and four main themes were identified: (1) seeing the value of the training programme; (2) Diverse people and groups working together; (3) Learner readiness and capacity; (4) Academic opportunities for learners and career growth. Alumni described significant personal impact, empowerment, academic contributions, and increased access to meaningful patient partner opportunities. Alumni reported co‐authoring publications and presenting their work at academic conferences and to various stakeholders, including health system leadership. Many alumni had no prior experience with qualitative participatory research, and participation in the programme supported the development of these research skills. Sponsors also noted impacts on their research programmes, such as securing additional funding informed by PaCER project findings.\n\n\nConclusion\nThe findings demonstrate that structured, experiential training for patients and community members supports meaningful engagement in health research, contributes to sustained capacity development, and positively influences the patient‐oriented research landscape.\n\n\nPatient or Public Contribution\nPatient partners were involved in the design and conduct of the study (data collection), analysis and interpretation of the data, and in the preparation of this manuscript.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\n\nBackground\nCo‐design has become a prominent approach in mental health research, policy and service development, aiming to centre lived experience within decision‐making processes. Despite its promise, co‐design practices often fall short, with reports of tokenism, constrained participation and limited influence. These limitations reflect deeper epistemic and relational inequities within mental health systems.\n\n\nDiscussion\nThis commentary argues that the challenges of co‐design can be understood through the lens of epistemic injustice, where certain forms of knowledge, particularly lived experience, are systematically devalued. Drawing on restorative justice principles, the paper proposes a relational and ethical reframing of participation. Restorative approaches—centred on truth‐telling, acknowledgement and repair—offer a means to address the relational harms and power imbalances that undermine meaningful participation. Building on this, the Cycle of Equitable Codesign is introduced as a staged framework comprising: (1) acknowledgement and truth‐telling, (2) restoration and relational repair and (3) co‐design and collective future‐making. The model emphasises the importance of timing, power and relational conditions in shaping equitable participation.\n\n\nConclusion\nRepositioning co‐design within a restorative framework highlights the need to move beyond procedural inclusion towards ethically grounded and relationally just practice. Addressing epistemic injustice is essential for co‐design to achieve its transformative potential in mental health systems.\n\n\nPatient and Public Contribution\nThis commentary is informed by existing literature on co‐design and lived experience participation in mental health. It centres and reflects on the reported experiences of people with lived experience of mental health challenges. ", "\nAbstract\nHostage diplomacy—detaining foreign nationals for leverage under the pretext of national law—is a growing international security problem. Beyond constituting a violation of international law, hostage diplomacy is challenging to resolve. Target states must deal with aggressive, sovereign perpetrators; handle a fraudulent but plausible legal process; account for numerous stakeholders; and protect their citizens from future harm. How do target‐state negotiators navigate these challenges? This theory‐building article explores perspective‐taking—imagining the world from another's vantage point—as a tool to shape target‐state negotiators' effectiveness in navigating hostage diplomacy. We introduce a model that conceptualizes perspective‐taking on two dimensions. First, negotiators can use multiple‐perspective taking, considering various stakeholders, including interests within their own government, the perpetrator's government, and the hostage's family. Second, across stakeholders, negotiators can take strategic, cultural, emotional, and moral perspectives. We posit that engaging in different forms of perspective‐taking improves target‐state negotiators' ability to identify a domestic win‐set, reach international agreement, and anticipate future crises. Drawing on insights from members of the U.S. hostage‐recovery enterprise, we offer a plausibility probe suggesting that perspective‐taking affects the process and outcomes of negotiations. Perspective‐taking may thus help negotiators better manage power dynamics, navigate informal rules of engagement, alleviate uncertainty, and bolster global security.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\nThe Russian invasion of Ukraine transitioned from an “existential war” into a “war of attrition.” The study assessed the impact of prolonged conflict on resilience and coping mechanisms through two cross‐sectional assessments conducted with independent samples (Sample 1 – July 2022 [N = 1001]; Sample 2 – November 2023 [N = 2247]). The respondents completed a quantitative questionnaire during the war, which included individual, community, and societal resilience, hope, sense of danger, perceived threats, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A significant decrease in all variables was found between Sample 1 and Sample 2 measurements. Path analysis indicated that government support is the variable most strongly related to societal resilience. Community resilience is the variable most strongly related to individual resilience. Perceived threats are the variable most strongly associated with PTSD symptoms. The above‐mentioned variables explain 68% (Sample 1) and 60% (Sample 2) of societal resilience, 19% (Sample 1 and Sample 2) of individual resilience, and 58% (Sample 1) and 12% (Sample 2) of PTSD symptoms. Findings suggest the “routinization” of an ongoing emergency, allowing the population to coexist with the adversity and accept war as the “new normalcy.” Nonetheless, the future remains uncertain, leading to a decline in hope. Strategies that bolster individual and societal resilience during adversities should include social support mechanisms that enhance the population's hope and morale and build the government's trust and support."]

", "\nABSTRACT\nWhile substantial efforts have been made to learn more about youth community violence exposure (CVE) and its wide‐ranging impact, less is known about the effects of different types of CVE on mental health outcomes, particularly internalizing behavior, across contextual factors. The current study examines types of CVE (i.e., hearing/learning about, witnessing, and victimization) across gender, age, socioeconomic status (SES), and racial and ethnic group (White, African American/Black, and Latinx) in a diverse sample of youth seeking treatment at a university‐based pediatric anxiety clinic. Older age (adolescence), male gender, and lower SES were associated with increased rates of CVE. Victimization was positively and significantly correlated with hearing reports of violence against familiars but negatively associated with hearing reports of violence against strangers, suggesting that youth who are victimized often have family or close friends who are also victims of violence, and those who hear about violence against strangers may be safe from victimization in some regards. Results from this study suggest that Black youth, in comparison to White youth, may experience more internalizing symptoms as the result of indirect CVE. For those who witnessed violence against people they know, Latinx youth reported lower levels of anxiety compared to both Black and White youth. In light of these results, potential risk and protective factors associated with CVE and presenting symptoms are discussed.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\nThe cultural politics of the ‘problematic’ ageing body have led to a search for solutions in the form of algorithmic technologies. In this article, we look at one problem associated with the ageing body—unintentional falls—and one proposed algorithmic intervention: wearable fall‐detection technology. In dialogue with sociologists concerned with the cultural politics of the older body, we aim to understand what contribution this fledgling technology makes to how the older body is ‘constituted’. To do this, we examine a sample of datasets containing measurements of individuals' movements and falls (which researchers have made available to train algorithms for use in fall‐detection wearables). In contrast to existing attempts to grasp how older users are scripted into technology, which focus on explicit ideas about them, we trace how individual subjects are formatted in these datasets. We find that these individuals become fragmented in the data, rendered into movements abstracted from the bodies that carry them out and the locations in which they take place. The older body is constituted, then, as a risky, deviant set of movements through space, irreducible to its component parts.\n"]

With this, there is a rising need for home care services and demand for online health information to facilitate the decision‐making among older adults and promote consumer‐directed care. This exploratory study aimed to examine how aged care provider websites present and structure information about Home Care Packages (HCPs) to support consumer decision‐making.\n\n\nMethods\nA web‐based content analysis of Australian provider websites was conducted by accessing websites using Google Chrome in incognito mode and using an evaluation tool that assessed language readability (Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level scores), usability features Web Content (Accessibility Guidelines V2.0) and the relevance and depth of HCP information. Descriptive statistics were calculated using SPSSv.29. Qualitative data were analysed using deductive content analysis. Data were extracted into Microsoft Excel and deductively coded using the structured evaluation tool developed for this study. Coded content was then narratively synthesised, augmented by researcher notes and illustrative quotes.\n\n\nResults\nFrom 25 systematically sampled websites, the median Flesch Reading Ease score was 52.5 (IQR 12.52) corresponding to a high school reading level of 10th–12th grade. Most sites featured small text (n = 21) and inconsistent information regarding services, pricing and case management. None of the websites in this analysis was found to be both user‐friendly and comprehensive in their HCP content.\n\n\nConclusions\nPoor usability and inconsistent information may limit older adults' ability to access and understand HCP details, reducing engagement with these online resources.\n\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\n\nObjective\nAustralia has an ageing population, with an increasing number of older people needing to live in residential aged care facilities (RACFs). There are more Emergency department (ED) presentations by older people living in Australia, including those that are from RACF, and many die in hospital. The aim of this study was to perform a descriptive analysis of hospital deaths, comparing the characteristics of patients from Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs) to those from non‐RACF accommodation.\n\n\nMethods\nThis study examined data from the In‐Hospital Death Database for a major metropolitan tertiary hospital. De‐identified data from 2015 to 2022 were extracted and included in the analysis. Data for patients over the age of 16 were collected. Data were matched on age and sex between the two groups.\n\n\nResults\nCompared with non‐RACF patients, patients from RACFs who died in hospital were more likely to have died from a respiratory illness, more likely to die in the ED, no more likely to have been a 28‐day readmission, more likely to have been admitted under Geriatrics, less likely to have been a coroner's case, and had a shorter length of stay. A large proportion of deaths of RACF patients (15%) were in the ED. Approximately 40% of patients from RACFs who died in hospital had Advance Care Plans (ACPs) in place prior to hospitalisation.\n\n\nConclusions\nThe relatively large percentage of RACF patients that die in the ED is concerning and raises the question of whether their end‐of‐life care may have been more appropriately delivered within the RACF. The rate of ACP among RACF patients was low but comparable to other studies, and higher than among non‐RACF patients.\n\n"]

", "\nAbstract\nThis article adopts a political ethnographic approach to follow narrative practices enacted by diplomats and bureaucrats during the trilogue negotiations of the European Union's (EU) Artificial Intelligence Act where inter‐institutional dynamics were at stake. I argue that when diplomats and bureaucrats negotiate AI, they also negotiate their desired position in a struggle over status in EU's diplomatic structures while constructing competing identities of the EU. The narrative analysis shows that three narrative positions endure, ethical and moral; national and economic; supranational and global, which interact through negotiation practices of brokerage and improvisation (re)negotiating social positions and (re)constructing three faces of a European AI identity. These narratives are not performed by a specific diplomat or bureaucrat but remain transversal, competing within and across national, ideological and institutional boundaries. The competing meanings are comprised into the AI Act constituting AI, its governance structure and the EU with ambiguous meanings."]

", "\nABSTRACT\nConsidering the enactment of a pro‐creditor bankruptcy reform in India as an exogenous policy shock, we investigate its impact on firms' tendency to avoid taxes. Employing the difference‐in‐differences (DiD) methodology, we find that post‐bankruptcy reform, distressed firms significantly reduced their tax avoidance than non‐distressed firms. Our channel analysis shows that increased borrowings, along with higher return on equity (RoE) and sales growth, help distressed firms reduce tax avoidance as opposed to non‐distressed firms during the post‐IBC period. The reduction in tax avoidance is due to improved credit culture after the said reform. Furthermore, our findings remain qualitatively similar under DiD with matching technique and the randomization inference test.\n"]

Trade spans the entire lifecycle of plastics, bringing plastic with high economic value and deep integration within global value chains. As a global environmental crisis, plastic pollution necessitates a synergistic approach to international governance. Discipline in plastic trade under the international legal framework not only helps reconcile the friction between trade and the environment, but also addresses the systemic inefficiencies stemming from regulatory fragmentation. With a focus on three key processes: the Plastic Waste Amendments to the Basel Convention, the WTO Dialogue on Plastic Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade, and the negotiations toward an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, this paper examines the basic paradigms of plastic trade governance and analyzes the deficiencies and geo‐economic obstacles it faces. Given the consideration of global plastic governance's high reliance on state participation, the paper further takes China as a primary case study, analyzing approaches for China to participate in plastic trade governance with the model of foreign‐related rule of law.\n"]

["Medical Anthropology Quarterly, EarlyView. ", "\nAbstract\nThis paper analyzes two disparate experiences of buprenorphine, a medication for opioid addiction, in California. Within the context of the U.S. War on Drugs and after decades of criminalization, buprenorphine represents a shift toward outpatient medical treatment of opioid addiction, but it has been unequally distributed and experienced across geographic settings and populations. Drawing on my interlocutor's description of buprenorphine's “hold,” I interrogate how buprenorphine's symbolic and pharmacological power to embrace, restrain, and otherwise “hold” people arises through its social context. “Holding” is a patient‐driven epistemology, working metaphorically and neurochemically, illustrating raced, classed, and gendered positionalities that simultaneously express and constrain forms of agency and resistance in ideological struggles over the meanings of care in addiction treatment. Buprenorphine's “hold,” or lack thereof, can be read as a neurochemical embodiment of state violence, revealing intensities of carceral forms of “care” and possibilities for transforming addiction treatment meanings.\n"]

["Political Psychology, Volume 47, Issue 4, August 2026. ", "\nAbstract\nHow immigrants respond to discrimination is a well‐studied topic in political psychology. However, less attention has been paid to whether the impact of discrimination on in‐group identification varies within minority groups and why. In Western Europe, Muslims experience significant discrimination and hostility based on their religious identity despite increasing educational integration and upward social mobility. Building on social identity theory and measuring both the strength and relative importance of religious identity, this paper reexamines the discrimination–in‐group identification link and investigates heterogeneity based on educational level. Drawing on an original survey of 1456 Turkish immigrants in Germany and combining a survey experiment and an observational study, this paper finds substantive heterogeneity: Higher educated immigrants strengthen their attachment to their religious group when they perceive discrimination, whereas lower educated immigrants tend to distance themselves from their in‐group. Additionally, while observational analyses support prior research showing that the average association between discrimination and in‐group identification is positive, the priming experiment does not provide evidence for a positive average causal effect. This study makes important empirical and theoretical contributions to research on in‐group religious identification and the integration paradox.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\nThis article examines how the reconstruction of Shanidar Z, a 75,000‐year‐old Neanderthal woman discovered in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, became a focal point for digital negotiations of identity, ancestry, and belonging. Drawing on 51 Facebook and YouTube posts and 17,126 associated comments in Kurdish, Arabic and English, the study combines thematic analysis with a critical discourse approach to explore how prehistoric heritage is symbolically appropriated online. The findings show that Shanidar Z was rapidly transformed from a scientific object into a culturally and politically charged symbol articulated through symbolic boundary‐making, deep historical narratives, and affective framings. Although scientific, religious, and state‐centred interpretations were present, nationalist framings were dominant and reinforced through everyday digital practices such as naming, interaction, and visual circulation. The article contributes to research on digital nationalism by demonstrating how deep prehistory can function as a symbolic resource in contemporary identity‐making, particularly in stateless and contested contexts.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\n\nIntroduction\nReimbursement decisions for orphan drugs are complex, as conventional cost‐effectiveness frameworks may not fully capture broader societal values. To investigate public preferences regarding the inclusion of rare disease drugs in China's Basic Medical Insurance (BMI) using a multi‐center discrete choice experiment.\n\n\nMethods\nFrom July to September 2024, a face‐to‐face, filed‐based discrete choice experiment (DCE) was conducted across four regions in China. Using non probability sampling technique which is known as Quota sampling, participants evaluated drug profiles varying in six attributes. Mixed logit model and latent class model were used for analysis. Relative importance, willingness to pay (WTP), scenario analysis and preference heterogeneity were estimated.\n\n\nResults\nOf the 761 respondents retained after initial data cleaning, 622 passed the internal consistency check and were included in the final analysis. Most participants were urban residents (62.7%), employed (66.6%), and covered by urban and rural resident basic medical insurance (BMI) (57.7%). The general public preferred including orphan drugs in BMI coverage when treatments provided greater health gains, targeted diseases with moderate untreated life expectancy, and lacked existing reimbursed alternatives. In contrast, poorer untreated quality of life and larger increases in BMI financing reduced utility. Health gains were the most important, followed by increases in BMI financing, untreated quality of life, existing BMI coverage, and untreated life expectancy. Annual WTP was ¥1.225 per capita for quality‐adjusted life years (QALY) gains (0.01–4), with lower WTP observed among respondents facing poorer untreated quality of life. Scenario analysis showed that 78.5% would support reimbursement for drugs providing maximal health gains (0.01–4). Preference heterogeneity was observed across age, sex, education, household income, insurance type, and urban–rural residence. Latent class analysis identified two subgroups. The “life‐saving group” (23%) showed strong preferences for greater disease severity and larger health gains, whereas the “pragmatist group” (77%) demonstrated relatively flatter preferences and negative utility associated with declining untreated life expectancy.\n\n\nConclusion\nWhile health gains drive preferences, the public also values equity, disease severity and affordability. Policymakers must integrate these multidimensional social values to ensure legitimacy and fairness in allocating finite resources for rare diseases.\n\n\nPatient or Public Contribution\nMembers of the public were involved in the development of the DCE. In the attribute development phase, members of the public participated in a pilot study to help ensure the clarity and comprehensibility of attribute descriptions and levels. And their feedback informed revisions to the questionnaire. ", "\nABSTRACT\n\nObjectives\nSmart home technologies are increasingly being developed to support ageing in place, yet evidence of their impact remains unclear. This review aimed to synthesise the existing evidence on the role of smart home technologies in enabling older adults aged 65 years and above to live safely at home.\n\n\nMethods\nA systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and retrospectively registered with the Open Science Framework (OSF; Registration DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/4ZJNC). Six databases were searched for studies published between 2020 and 2025. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed‐methods studies evaluating smart home technologies were included. Methodological quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist and the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Data were synthesised thematically.\n\n\nResults\nThirty studies from 10 countries were included. Smart home technologies supported physiological monitoring, safety, functional and emergency detection, social interaction and cognitive support. Reported benefits in some studies included reduced healthcare utilisation, improved quality of life and independence, enhanced chronic disease management, and positive experiences for users and carers. However, findings were heterogeneous across technologies, populations and outcome measures. Key barriers included privacy, cost, technical reliability and digital literacy.\n\n\nConclusions\nSmart home technologies show potential to support ageing in place by enhancing safety, independence and chronic disease management, while possibly reducing healthcare utilisation and improving quality of life. However, the evidence base remains heterogeneous, with a variety of technologies evaluated, study designs used and outcomes reported. Robust longitudinal studies, standardised outcome measures and comprehensive cost‐effectiveness evaluations are needed to inform implementation, equity and policy development.\n\n"]

While greater socioecological supports are associated with reduced victimization, their role in protecting TGDA against multi‐victimization is underexplored.\n\nMethods\nWe conducted a cross‐sectional analysis of health risk behavior survey data from students (N = 4207) across 13 high schools in a mid‐sized U.S. city. We compared victimization rates and socioecological support levels (i.e., parental monitoring, perceived social support, food and housing security) and associations between socioecological support and victimization, accounting for between‐school differences. We included two‐way interactions between gender and socioecological supports.\n\nResults\nTGDA reported more frequent multi‐victimization and lower socioecological support than cisgender adolescents. Across all groups, greater socioecological support was associated with experiencing fewer victimization types. Food security was more protective for cisgender girls than cisgender boys.\n\nImplications for School Health Policy, Practice, and Equity\nEnhancing socioecological support may reduce multi‐victimization for all youth, with TGDA having the greatest need. Schools' advocacy and innovative efforts to bolster socioecological support are critical to TGDA wellbeing.\n\nConclusions\nModifiable socioecological supports may reduce adolescent multi‐victimization. TGDA have lower support rates and higher multi‐victimization rates, suggesting the need for tailored interventions.\n"]

By focusing on how these screenings are practiced in Indonesian clinics, I argue that migrant tuberculosis screenings in the Indonesia–Malaysia migration corridor enact a distinct form of tuberculosis, co‐determined by its relation to border control—what I call border tuberculosis. The notion of border tuberculosis draws attention to how biomedical practices and standards are adjusted in ways that lend themselves to the selective and productive function of the border. Thus, the article shows that these biomedical screenings are not disinterested instances of data gathering, but constitutive and productive elements of the particular mode of governing borders they are embedded in.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\nThis paper explores the perspectives of mental health and substance use providers who supported people released from custody during the pandemic in Ontario, Canada, with a focus on service disruptions, adaptations, and experiences. We conducted 20 in‐depth qualitative interviews and analysed these using Applied Thematic Analysis. Pandemic public health responses limited the ability of providers to support people released from custody. Policies designed to mitigate viral spread were not tailored to the mental health and substance use context, leading to disruptions in service delivery. This had domino effects for service users and providers. Criminal‐legal‐involved populations had to isolate and at the same time providers could not reach out to them, leading to increased risks for substance use, overdose, and suicide. Providers in turn felt pressure to help people released from custody, when policy made it exceedingly difficult for them to do so. Still, providers did find silver linings through opportunities to work together and provide better person‐centred care. For future pandemic preparedness, decision‐makers must consider the unintentional fallout that blanket policies can have on underserved communities and mitigate against unintended consequences. Future research should engage underserved communities to understand their needs during emergencies.\n"]

Digital tools to support reproductive life planning may improve reproductive health counseling and outcomes for these women. We evaluated user experiences with a self‐administered, tablet‐based family planning (FP) counseling tool as part of a digital health intervention implemented within a cluster randomized trial in Kenya. We conducted 10 focus group discussions with WLHIV (n = 95) who received the counseling tool and in‐depth interviews (n = 10) with providers. Data were collected using semistructured guides, transcribed, translated, and thematically analyzed. Women's median age was 26 years, and 52 percent were married. Providers had a median of seven years’ experience. WLHIV and providers found the counseling tool acceptable and felt it improved decision‐making, FP knowledge, and patient–provider interactions. Women reported that the counseling tool supported informed FP decisions, improved awareness about less familiar options, and dispelled myths and misconceptions. Providers said the counseling tool helped tailor counseling, though it was challenging to use with women with more FP experience or with a selected method, but helpful among new FP users and adolescents. Participants also felt that the tool was lengthy. Tailoring the counseling tool and making it optional for specific groups of WLHIV may improve feasibility.\n"]

A critical gap remains in the systematic analysis of complementarity, non‐linearity, and the interdependencies between these practices. To address this gap, we draw on complementarity theory to propose and test a novel framework. This framework posits that hospital performance is shaped by three distinct effects: indeterminacy, where isolated practices have an inconsistent impact; non‐linearity, where practices are effective only above a certain intensity threshold; and complementarity, where synergies between practices amplify their collective impact. We use this framework to explain the significant productivity dispersion observed across hospitals. Using panel data from English NHS hospitals, we employ machine learning techniques to identify distinct HRM clusters and test their significance using correlated random effects models. Our findings confirm that individual HRM practices often have no significant effect until their intensity surpasses a critical threshold. Crucially, we identify several distinct complementary clusters involving incentives, workplace flexibility, training, team quality, and job design. High‐performing hospitals are distinguished by their adoption of these synergistic bundles—such as combining job design, team quality, and incentives—whereas persistent low performance is linked to the adoption of incomplete clusters. For instance, workplace flexibility or training only boosts productivity when supported by an effective incentive system, underscoring the powerful non‐linear and interdependent effects at play. This study advances the HRM and healthcare management literature by systematically demonstrating the non‐linear and complementary nature of HRM practices and by introducing data‐driven methods for their analysis. The key implication for policymakers and hospital administrators is the need to prioritise bundles of complementary practices and holistic organisational change over isolated, piecemeal initiatives.\n"]

Post‐presentation surveys measured knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions, with grade‐matched peers serving as a comparison group. Teachers of participating classes were surveyed for feedback.\n\nResults\nOf 908 participating students, 755 received the presentation and 153 were used as a comparison group. The presentation group scored significantly higher on knowledge‐based questions (6.86/8 vs. 5.98/8, p < 0.01). Students rated firearm violence a major concern (median = 8/10), and both students and teachers supported its inclusion in health curriculum.\n\nImplications for School Health Policy, Practice, and Equity\nFindings demonstrate the feasibility of integrating school‐based firearm injury prevention education into health curriculum. We argue that, beyond repressing or deterring regime opponents, digital surveillance serves as an instrument of everyday governance that operates through psychological mechanisms rather than direct coercion. Specifically, pervasive monitoring fosters routine compliance with the regime through self‐regulation and mutual observation. However, these effects attenuate over time as citizens habituate to surveillance and update risk assessments about noncompliance. We test this argument against empirical evidence from China. Drawing on in‐depth fieldwork and employing a quasi‐natural experiment enabled by two pilot surveillance projects that coincided with two national social surveys, we reveal digital surveillance's paradoxical short‐ and long‐term effects: Newly introduced surveillance significantly boosts citizen compliance. Over time, however, this effect diminishes, and even reinforced surveillance cannot sustain the initial surge in compliance. The findings highlight both the potency and the limits of digital surveillance as a tool of authoritarian governance.\n"]

Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we analyzed the association between adolescent weapon‐related violence (Wave 1) and depression in adulthood (Wave 4), with insomnia (Wave 2) as a mediator (N = 3924). Community weapon‐related violence was associated with higher levels of depression in adulthood, 13 years post‐exposure, through insomnia (β = 0.01, p = 0.01). Insomnia accounted for 7% of the total effect of weapon‐related violence on depressive symptoms, indicating a partial mediation effect. Our findings identify a pathway through which adolescent community weapon‐related violence leads to depression in adulthood, underscoring the need for early interventions targeting insomnia to reduce long‐term depression risk in this population.\n"]

Second, they operate with expectations inherited from a previously better‐resourced institutional network, generating tensions between normative ideals of care and limited referral possibilities. Following the dramaturgical framework of deliberations by Hajer and adhering to the sociology of diagnosis, we focus on how the algorithm interacted with the established deliberative dynamics of the meetings. We show that by the algorithm's presence, physicians were prompted to speculate about what the algorithm could mean for their collective diagnosis. They did not foresee an independent or leading role for the algorithm yet speculated about how, when and by whom the algorithmic output should be presented. Some physicians followed dominant AI tropes of self‐evidence and objectivity, whereas others sought ways to contextualise and question the algorithmic output. We argue that following a dramaturgical framework unveils important questions that must be addressed to make algorithms fit into existing diagnostic practices, such as who represents the algorithm, when and how.\n"]

However, how public health practitioners determine when someone's behaviours constitute ‘significant’ risk remains underexplored. We drew on assemblage theory to examine how HIV risk is co‐constituted through the interplay among biomedical technologies, institutional practices, legal frameworks and social discourses. We conducted 18 semi‐structured interviews with public health personnel and used reflexive thematic analysis. Five interrelated themes emerged. First, high viral load was considered a potential risk indicator when associated with high‐risk activities. Second, discontinuity in HIV care may flag individuals for intervention. Third, co‐infection with sexually transmissible and blood‐borne infections (STBBI) triggered a viral load review to assess HIV exposure potential. Fourth, noncompliance with public health directives positioned PLWH as needing management. Fifth, Undetectable = Untransmittable (U = U) discourses have reconfigured and neutralised risk, functioning as a technology of reflexive governance. However, uptake of U = U was described as uneven across Ontario's public health units, leading to variable, and sometimes coercive, approaches. By conceptualising HIV risk as emergent, this study challenges individualised notions of responsibility and highlights the relational production of risk. Adoption of U = U and equity‐based public health practices is needed to ensure nonpunitive HIV responses.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\nInformation and communication technology (ICT) goods are central to digital transformation, technological upgrading and participation in global production networks. Yet relatively little is known about whether immigrant networks shape international trade in these knowledge‐intensive goods. Using bilateral panel data for 172 countries over the 2000–2021 period, we estimate gravity‐based specifications, Tobit models and linear fixed‐effects models for ICT goods trade. The results show a positive and statistically significant relationship between immigrant networks and ICT goods trade, especially exports. The export relationship remains positive after controlling for productive capacity, while the import relationship weakens. Interaction models further show that immigrant networks are more strongly related to ICT goods trade when immigrants' home countries have greater ICT export capacity. Marginal‐effect estimates indicate that the relationship operates through both the extensive and intensive margins of trade. The findings suggest that immigrant networks are especially relevant for ICT goods trade when cross‐border social and commercial ties connect destination markets to technologically capable home countries.\n"]

We used a descriptive qualitative design and employed thematic analysis to examine the contributing factors to the lack of trust in healthcare among African immigrants in Florida, US. We conducted in‐depth interviews with 19 participants selected through purposive and snowball sampling. The interviews were audio‐recorded, transcribed verbatim, and thematically analysed using Nvivo14 software. The findings revealed two overarching themes: (a) personal and (b) institutional factors of lack of healthcare trust. Personal factors included language and communication challenges, lack of knowledge, past negative healthcare experiences, fear of losing legal status, and the use of traditional medicine and prayer as a substitute for modern medicine. Institutional factors included providers' lack of knowledge, wrong assumptions and ignorance, lack of diversity in healthcare, repeated tests and burdensome documentation, malpractice, lack of financial transparency and unfair cost, over‐medicalisation, racial divide and discrimination, and unfavourable policy conditions. The findings suggest a holistic approach that involves improving healthcare navigation skills among African immigrants; adopting a patient‐centred approach; enhancing health literacy; strengthening cultural competency training and education on tropical medicine for healthcare providers; promoting diversity within the healthcare workforce; and engaging in anti‐racism practices that ensure provider accountability. It is also critical to promote policies that ensure financial transparency and coordinated care, reduce unnecessary testing and documentation, and promote safe and equitable access to healthcare for African immigrants.\n"]

Yet, the role of CNS drugs in late‐life suicide remains unclear.\n\n\nMethods\nWe conducted a nationwide register‐based matched case‐control study (1:30) including all individuals aged 65 years and older who died by suicide in Sweden between 2007 and 2020. Each case was matched to controls from the general population on age and sex, alive at the index date. Use of CNS medications was examined within 1‐month, 3‐month, and 12‐month windows prior to the index date (date of suicide). Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with adjustment for sociodemographic factors, number of other classes of medications (proxy for comorbidities), frailty score, self‐harm history and major psychiatric diagnoses.\n\n\nResults\nAmong 5971 older adults who died by suicide, 71.7% of cases used at least one type of CNS drug (vs. 35.2% of controls), while 34.7% of cases had dispensations for three or more CNS drug types (vs. 7.3% of controls) within one year before death by suicide. The most common drug classes among cases were hypnotics and sedatives (46.5%) and antidepressants (38.8%). About one third of cases used anxiolytics (32.3%) or minor analgesics and antipyretics (29.9%). Compared with controls, individuals who died by suicide more often used hypnotics and sedatives (adjusted OR 3.54, 95% CI 3.32–3.77), anxiolytics (aOR 3.27, 95% CI 3.04–3.52), antidepressants (aOR 2.50, 95% CI 2.33–2.68), and opioids (aOR 1.93, 95% CI 1.79–2.09) within 12 months before suicide. Patterns were consistent across time windows.\n\n\nConclusions\nCNS medications are commonly dispensed before suicide in older adults, particularly hypnotics and sedatives, antidepressants, anxiolytics, and opioids. These findings describe medication use patterns preceding suicide and identify drug classes for further investigation.\n\n"]

Data were collected using unstructured and semi‐structured interviews, supplemented by field notes, and analyzed in accordance with Strauss and Corbin's (2015) methodology.\n\n\nFindings\nThe primary concern of loneliness was conceptualized as “Aging Longing: The Yearning for Companionship and Emotional Bonds,” manifesting at three levels: (1) interpersonal—a craving for intimate companionship; (2) intrapersonal—emotional and physical suffering accompanied by mental turmoil due to loneliness; and (3) social—encompassing experiences of loneliness stemming from disconnection from family networks and environmental constraints. Participants employed three adaptive strategies: “Inner Flourishing” (accepting loneliness and discovering joy in solitude), “Revitalizing Social Networks” (strengthening communal and personal ties), and “Emotional Transformation” (alleviating distress and fostering self‐reinvention). Together, these strategies culminated in the overarching category of “Reconstructing the Meaning of Life.”\n\n\nConclusion\nLoneliness in older adults poses significant emotional challenges. However, this study, set within Iran's unique socio‐cultural context, reveals that they can adapt through three distinct mechanisms: Inner Flourishing (finding purpose in solitude), Revitalizing Social Networks (rebuilding communal ties), and Emotional Transformation (employing cognitive and spiritual coping strategies). These findings provide a culturally‐grounded framework that suggests loneliness can be a catalyst for both distress and personal growth. People with dementia from these communities have unique needs, and they can experience health inequity. The aim of this study was to use inclusive methods to explore key factors contributing to and identify potential adaptations required for culturally inclusive and acceptable occupational therapy interventions for people living with dementia.\n\n\nMethods\nWe adopted best practice research methodology for working with people living with dementia from diverse communities. We conducted three collaborative workshops using co‐design techniques. Attendees discussed a hypothetical vignette using group problem‐solving. Findings were mapped to the key cultural adaptation framework elements using content analysis.\n\n\nResults\nTwenty‐one people from diverse communities with living experience of dementia attended one of three collaborative workshops. Participants were accepting of occupational therapy intervention components. Priority areas for delivering inclusive interventions were knowing the person, establishing a therapeutic relationship and expressing cultural humility.\n\n\nConclusion\nThe therapist themselves is the key factor that supports the delivery of inclusive interventions. They should be aware of and be responsive to the cultural needs of diverse communities, adjust their therapeutic approach and be prepared to offer flexibility. Working in partnership fostered successful research collaboration, showcasing how people living with dementia from diverse communities can be supported to contribute to research and potentially influence ‘higher order’ healthcare issues.\n\n"]
