Our results show that higher CESID levels significantly reduce financial default risk, particularly in firms with strong internal controls and greater institutional investor presence. These findings align with agency theory, highlighting governance mechanisms that mitigate information asymmetry, and stakeholder theory, demonstrating how transparency fosters trust and reduces financial distress. This study contributes to the sustainability and finance literature by positioning CESID as a strategic tool for financial risk management in emerging markets. ", "\nABSTRACT\nThis article examines how the reconstruction of Shanidar Z, a 75,000‐year‐old Neanderthal woman discovered in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, became a focal point for digital negotiations of identity, ancestry, and belonging. Drawing on 51 Facebook and YouTube posts and 17,126 associated comments in Kurdish, Arabic and English, the study combines thematic analysis with a critical discourse approach to explore how prehistoric heritage is symbolically appropriated online. The findings show that Shanidar Z was rapidly transformed from a scientific object into a culturally and politically charged symbol articulated through symbolic boundary‐making, deep historical narratives, and affective framings. Although scientific, religious, and state‐centred interpretations were present, nationalist framings were dominant and reinforced through everyday digital practices such as naming, interaction, and visual circulation. The article contributes to research on digital nationalism by demonstrating how deep prehistory can function as a symbolic resource in contemporary identity‐making, particularly in stateless and contested contexts.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\nDebates in public health ethics have been dominated by the assumptions of Western liberalism: a priority given to liberty and autonomy over other values, an individualistic view of social ontology, a focus on personal responsibility, a minimal set of obligations (only created through consent), and a marginalization of social, cultural, and religious context. Examining issues in public health ethics from the perspective of a different moral tradition reveals that such assumptions are not timeless truths, but rather choices that require justification. In this paper, we briefly outline a view of Confucianism and explore how this approach can be used to articulate a critical approach to much contemporary public health ethics. Confucianism suggests a radically different perspective toward obligations, agency, and responsibility, as well as a more relational conception of social ontology and a shared notion of well‐being. Of course, some discussion in public health ethics, within the constraints of Western traditions, has pushed in this direction before. In offering a Confucian perspective on public health ethics, we are not suggesting that Confucianism is the one true approach to ethics and that everyone should become a Confucian. We are, however, seeing our discussion as a source of epistemic critique of Western liberalism, exposing the need for more active defense of assumptions at its core, as well as providing an opportunity to broaden the set of values that inform justifiable public health policy.\n"]

The challenges of space living, such as extreme environmental conditions and limited resources, raise critical questions about the practicality and morality of reproduction in these contexts. This paper argues that in extraterrestrial space, human reproduction based on assisted reproductive technologies is morally preferable to sexual reproduction. We explore the benefits of technologies like embryo selection, genome editing, and artificial wombs, emphasizing their potential to mitigate the risks posed by space environments. There is no doubt that the idea of human reproduction based solely on technology is controversial and counterintuitive, even if it were to be applied only, at least initially, for the continued existence of the human population settled in space. Nevertheless, there are strong rationales for the fact that non‐sexual reproduction is not only beneficial, but also has moral advantages. Finally, we also examine the social and political implications of a society that moves beyond sexual reproduction, including the reduction of gendered oppression and the redefinition of family structures. We suggest that these advancements could transform reproduction not only in space but also on Earth, potentially reducing injustices caused by human biology and reshaping societal norms and traditional view on family.\n"]

Despite its significance, there has been surprisingly little discussion in practice about conceptual approaches and the nature of harm in medical ethics analyses. We examine how different conceptual accounts of harm shape ethical decision making through examples from clinical ethics consultation and data‐intensive medical innovations. By applying three prevailing theoretical‐philosophical frameworks—the counterfactual, temporal, and non‐comparative accounts of harm—to these cases, we demonstrate that explicitly identifying and discussing stakeholders' varying concepts of harm is crucial for ethical analyses in medicine and healthcare. While harm is only one of many considerations influencing medical ethics decision‐making, our analysis reveals that different conceptualisations of harm can lead to substantively different practical outcomes. In this way, how we understand harm can affect recommendation processes, stakeholder communication, and assessments of quality of life and best interests. Without making different types of harm explicit, stakeholders might talk past each other when weighing harm against benefit, as what constitutes harm in one case may not be considered harm in another. We argue that explicit consideration of the nature of harm ensures comprehensive ethical deliberation, and integrates multiple perspectives in healthcare settings. Our findings suggest that the ethical importance of conceptual analysis of harm extends beyond mere theoretical interest, with direct implications for clinical practice and ethical decision making in healthcare."]

", "\nABSTRACT\nIn this paper, I argue that negative genetic selection should play a significant role in space exploration and colonization, at least until therapeutic gene editing and repair technologies are cheap and effective enough to enable modification of embryos that would otherwise be selected against and discarded. I present two key reasons supporting this claim. First, there are many traits prospective parents have strong reasons to select against in the Earth context despite the lack of the significant environmental pressures present in space, and these reasons are likely to persist in the context of space exploration and colonization. Second, both in general and in the high‐stakes context of space exploration and colonization, negative selection is likely to be desirable to implement. With regard to the latter context, this is because negative selection can help increase the chances of astronaut survival, mission success, and thriving space colonies by ensuring that astronauts do not have certain traits that would negatively impact those chances. For all these reasons, space bioethicists should avoid prematurely ruling out negative selection as a useful and desirable tool for ensuring that future space exploration and colonization missions have maximally effective and healthy crews.\n"]

In response to this requirement, this paper first asks how a critical bioethics of space can move beyond a basic four‐principles approach. Having set this initial framework, we arrive at the observation that in political and bioethical discourse a common tendency exists to explain away space activity as ‘inevitable’. This trope requires (bio)ethical attention since portraying human engagement with outer space as a ‘fixed reality’ aligns with dominant political narratives that legitimize control over territory. After this, we outline three additional (value‐laden) lines of reasoning that further reinforce this ideological work as they sustain unwarranted beliefs about what is considered a speculative future and what is not. We then explore the overarching notion of futurity and its impact on bioethical engagement with space exploration. A closer look at such speculative futurism reveals whose ‘humanity’ is being centered and who is envisioned as a part of this future. This paper fits within an understanding of critical feminist and naturalized bioethics that not only brings the arguments used in a bioethical discussion into harsh light but also the boundaries that make this discussion possible in the first place. Approved by the U.S. FDA in 2022 for adolescents aged 12 and older, it has since been authorized in several other countries. Despite this, its use among youth remains limited, with ongoing concerns about its long‐term safety, efficacy, and suitability during periods of growth and development. Advocates see Wegovy as an important tool for addressing pediatric obesity and its psychological burdens, while critics caution against widespread use in such a vulnerable population. This paper examines an underexplored ethical dimension of Wegovy's use in children: its impact on mental health. We argue that Wegovy may offer mental health benefits for children—such as reducing weight stigma, improving self‐esteem, and avoiding invasive interventions such as bariatric surgery. However, these potential benefits are constrained by barriers to access, supply shortages, risks of misuse, and the possibility of reinforcing stigma and class‐based discrimination. In light of these considerations, we argue that while Wegovy offers promising health benefits for children, its long‐term effects on growth, development, and mental health remain uncertain, warranting further study before definitive policy decisions are made. If future evidence confirms its value, it is our view that access should be equitable and accompanied by reforms to reduce stigma, regulate prescribing, and prevent misuse. Until then, clinicians should prescribe cautiously, ensuring clear medical need and implementing safeguards against risks such as weight regain, treatment interruption, and bias in care.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\nDuring this era of political apologies, a new literature has emerged in historical injustice interrogating the relationship between structural and historical injustice, with various theories conceptualising the relationship in different ways. Interestingly, ‘apology’ rarely appears in this literature. In this article, I consider why that is the case and I argue that it is a mistake. While the ‘conventional’ definition of political apology does not lend itself to understandings of historical injustice through the lens of structural injustice, recent conceptions of ‘transformative’ apologies are compatible with and desirable within the structural injustice framework. To begin, I outline a conventional view of political apology. Then I briefly survey the literature on structural‐historical injustice and I suggest reasons as to why apology is rarely discussed: the problems of traceability, disentangling structures and events, authenticity, and restoring a moral baseline. However, recent literature on political apologies has stressed their transformative potential, encouraging liberal democracies to reflect on who ‘we’ want to be. I argue that transformative apologies, understood as a moment of re‐founding or re‐constitution of society, can and should be incorporated into structural injustice theory, committing societies to a future in which such a structural injustice will not recur.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\nThis paper examines Israel's destruction and ‘humanitarianisation’ of Palestinian health systems, arguing that this should be understood as an instance of ‘necropolitics,’ as conceived by Achille Mbembe. We review the extensive, long‐term destruction of health systems in Palestine before 7 October 2023 and the catastrophic acceleration of that destruction in Gaza in the years since. We show that this process is central to Israel's project of limiting Palestinian life to what Mbembe calls a ‘death world’, a space where power is exercised through the systematic exposure of a population to death, and that it serves the security and economic agendas of Israel and its allies. By reducing Palestinians to death‐like living conditions through the destruction and subsequent humanitarianisation of health infrastructure, Israel optimises its control over the remaining population of Gaza. We argue that necropolitics, and biopolitics more generally, are vital yet underused tools in bioethics, without which situations of extreme oppression cannot be adequately theorised.\n"]

If we give up on the idea that our obligations to use technologies of genetic selection are discharged once we try to secure the birth of a healthy child, as advocates of human enhancement insist that we should, it seems that parents will be either be obligated to choose male children or obligated to choose female children, depending on whether it is better to be born male or female. The only way to avoid the conclusion that parents have reason to prefer children of one sex is to concede that a reference to normal human health plays a central, and proper, role in our deliberations about the ethics of genetic selection. Importantly, this concept of normal human health is bifurcated, such that both male infants and female infants can count as healthy babies. Placing sex selection alongside selection against genetic disease and selection for the best child therefore reveals the importance of intuitions about the normative significance of sex that are increasingly contested in wider debates about the salience of sex for medicine and social policy.\n"]

While military leaders’ global health research objectives relate to the military's strategic goals, including force health protection and national security, it is only through longstanding partnerships with partner nations in several world regions that much of the relevant research is possible. Yet military priorities may differ starkly from those of the collaborating partner nations, raising concerns about the potential for exploitation in global health partnerships. However, in spite of differences in overall strategic priorities, a convergence of stakeholder interests allows for appropriate alignment in the choice of clinical research activities at global health sites supported by the military. These complex collaborative research arrangements depend on negotiating and navigating the selection of research goals and activities to ensure fairness and balancing of priorities among partners, thereby maintaining research infrastructure and capacity. Finally, the case discusses the ethical dimensions of news reporting within medical facilities, especially if this is part of the military effort to share information about the military campaign. Amidst this change, the notion of “self‐censorship” has gained increased prominence. Not only has self‐censorship emerged as a common reference point, several recent studies identify it as embodying a corrosion of speech‐related values. Despite this, the term self‐censorship lacks a clear and settled definition, and the normative status of self‐censorship isn't self‐evident. While it can be troubling if people feel unable to speak openly, judicious silence is often a virtue, and sometimes morally required. Against this backdrop, I offer an account of a central bad‐making dimension of self‐censorship that helps us distinguish benign from pernicious forms. On this view, self‐censorship is pernicious to the extent that it involves acquiescing to others' judgments of acceptable speech or belief. Identifying what is pernicious about certain forms of self‐censorship in turn helps us sort between the types of social penalties on speech and belief that we ought to be more or less concerned about.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\nI argue that indoctrination undermines voter competence, and that widespread indoctrination thereby compromises the legitimacy of otherwise free and fair elections. Drawing on recent work in virtue epistemology, I provide an epistemic account of indoctrination according to which one is indoctrinated only if they hold an epistemically impactful belief with an intellectually vicious dogmatic attitude. After clarifying these notions, I show that politically indoctrinated subjects lack epistemic agency with respect to their vote, rendering them incompetent as voters. Therefore, if indoctrinated voters successfully elect a candidate, then the result is illegitimate, even if the election is otherwise free and fair. More speculatively, I suggest that this problem is not merely contingent, but structural: under conditions of low‐cost distribution of information, democracy incentivizes widespread indoctrination as a political strategy, thereby incentivizing a practice that undermines its own legitimacy.\n"]

", "\nABSTRACT\nGovernment health research funders are frequently criticized on the grounds that their distribution of resources fails to reflect a population's disease burden. These critiques do not take into account what other research funders are doing. In this paper, I argue that this is a mistake. Both governmental and non‐profit research funders ought to be aiming for a just distribution of overall research resources. Individual funders faced with the non‐compliance of other funders therefore have two ethical obligations. First, an obligation to coordinate: each ought to share information about its funding allocations, to actively coordinate its activities with other funders, and to encourage other funders to do as they should. Second, an obligation to counterbalance: where an individual funder expects continuing non‐compliance by other funders, it should skew its own funding so as to compensate for the shortfall as far as it can.\n"]

We explored frontline healthcare professionals' perspectives in Maputo, Mozambique. Semi‐structured interviews with healthcare professionals at four hospitals (April–June 2022) were recorded in Portuguese, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. Fixed‐response items were captured in REDCap and summarized descriptively. Fifty‐three respondents described varied perspectives on duty. Nearly half affirmed unconditional obligations grounded in professional ethics. Many framed duty as contingent on available PPE and institutional support; 8% were unsure. Themes included irregular PPE distribution, unequal training, and reliance on informal information, shaping perceived risk, preparedness, and responsibility. Quantitative summaries echoed these patterns: only 58% reported receiving training, and as PPE re‐supply declined many felt exposed. Sustaining duty to care in resource‐constrained settings during an outbreak requires reliable PPE provision, equitable and timely training, and trustworthy communication systems to protect workers and strengthen health‐system resilience. Findings show a progression from acute, episode‐based distress to chronic forms linked to persistent structural barriers, culminating in moral numbing. This trajectory reflects repeated exposure to situations where clinicians cannot act in line with professional obligations. Some participants reported that peer support and professional advocacy can partially interrupt this process, though these responses shift burden onto individuals.
